Fire Cider-Magic in a jar

This cider has been on my radar for quite some time because of it’s amazing health benefits. I had a gal date with a good acupuncturist friend who has been making it for a while and I wanted her to teach me her ways. This is one of the easier “good-for-you” recipes you can have in your arsenal for the chillier months. It's also fun to teach friends how to make or give as gifts during the holiday season!

I’m not claiming this to be a cure all by any means, but all the foods in this recipe are medicinal powerhouses and why not use food as medicine whenever you can.

I’m slightly obsessed with anti-inflammatory anything, so when I heard about everything that was in this, I knew that the concoction would pack a punch. It’s tangy, spicy, sweet, warming, and energizing all at once.

Onion, garlic, horseradish, jalapeno, citrus, ginger, turmeric, and apple cider vinegar gets to simmer all together for 4-6 weeks until the flavors have all combined. After it’s all strained, add your favorite local honey to sweeten it up and voila! You have an amazing health tonic you can use throughout the fall and winter to ward off pesky colds, boost your overall immune system, , reduces inflammation, is loaded up on antioxidants, warms the body, and contains antibacterial properties.

Fire Cider Recipe:

· 1 medium onion, roughly chopped

· 2 jalapenos, halved

· 2 lemons, thick wheels

· ¼ cup horseradish, grated

· 1 cup ginger, roughly chopped

· ¼ cup turmeric (I used powder, but fresh is always better)

· Handful of garlic cloves, smashed

· 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper

· Bottle raw apple cider vinegar

· 1/2 -3/4 cup raw local honey

Process:

1. Add all the ingredients except honey to a 2 quart mason jar and pour in ACV until everything is covered and it’s filled close to the top. Use a plastic lid to secure and tighten

2. Shake each day for 4-6 weeks.

3. Once it’s done marinating and doing its magic, strain all the liquid through a cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer

4. Add in softened honey until you reach your desired sweetness. It may seem like a lot of honey, but this balances out the pungent flavors that are going on, plus honey is packed with antioxidants and is antibacterial when you source locally

5. Store in the fridge and use daily throughout the colder months.

6. Feel free to freeze all that veggie goodness that was doing the work and add to soups and stews in the future.

*Enjoy as a 1 oz shot daily, added into water as a tonic or multiple tablespoons a day when feeling a cold forming
